Ebook About Half Filipino but raised in an American household, Deborah Francisco Douglas had always longed to know more about her Filipino heritage. So when a thick government-issued envelope arrived at her door announcing her assignment to the Philippines as a Peace Corps Volunteer, she snatched the opportunity and set out on a journey of self-discovery, travel, and adventure. Arriving in the mountain town of Baguio City, Philippines, she was introduced to a life of obnoxious roosters, bucket baths, and kids shouting her name every time she walked down the street. Despite her attempts to get involved in the community, her desire for belonging and identity did not materialize as quickly as planned. Realizing that “Filipino time” means nothing ever happens in a hurry, Deborah braces for the journey ahead, hoping to find answers, and above all, to find herself. Filled with warmth and humor, Somewhere in the Middle captures the simple joy found in ordinary moments and in the people we share our lives with, shedding new light on what it truly means to find the place where you belong. Whether you’re hoping to unearth your own cultural roots, volunteer abroad, or find your next travel adventure, this memoir offers inspiration for all those yearning to discover who they are and where they belong in the world.Praise for Somewhere in the Middle"Douglas is an amiable narrator, and those searching for their own roots will take pleasure in this heartfelt memoir." ~ Publishers Weekly"[Somewhere in the Middle] is a youthful, refreshing take..." ~ Elizabeth Ann QuirinoBook Somewhere in the Middle: A journey to the Philippines in search of roots, belonging, and identity Review :
Don't know about the actual literary merit of the book, however, the book printing and binding is defective. Pages 117-126 were cut incorrectly, causing text to have been sliced off; pages are also bound in reverse order, so where page 117 should be you have instead a cut off, incomplete text page 126 and that begins the backward countdown up to page 117 (where 126 should be). From there on, the rest of the book at a cursory glance seems ok. Returning and hoping for a printed version without these mistakes, otherwise will need to request a simple refund. This memoir is well-written I appreciate the moments when the author shares what she learned. I find humor in them. Her vulnerability is admirable. Throughout the book, I often reflected on my own experiences in the Philippines and found myself wanting to share them with the author. For example, how I would stay with my Lola and adapted to the “CR.” I wanted to know if she liked the mango with shrimp paste? Or, where her most favorite place to visit was? I was intrigued by her description of “tambay,” which made so much sense. Reading this memoir provided many moments of nostalgia.
